13 Financial dealings

Educated people can be ignorant sometimes. When I was a kid, my brother bought a watering system from his friend. Since we couldn't pay for it in one go, we paid for the first half and negotiated to pay the second installment in three months. After two weeks, a solicitor called and wanted us to pay our debt. We were very upset since we had agreed on extra time to pay the second half of the money. The only thing to do was to sell our cow. If we were rich, selling a cow wouldn't hurt us. However, it was the only cow we had. If we sold it, what would we eat? If my brother's friend had waited three months, we could have paid our debt without selling our cow. Finally, my father sold the cow. When we brought the money to the solicitor, he wanted more than we initially discussed. Even though we argued, there was nothing that could be done because we hadn't asked for a written agreement when we paid the first installment. My father gave what money we had and asked for more time for the rest. I wanted to object to this situation, but my father said that some people are cruel. The lesson here is that we should not buy anything in installments. If we do, then we have to make sure that we choose the right people. Even though my father didn't want to argue anymore, I decided to fight for our rights and look for another solicitor.

There was a man sitting in the solicitor's office. I thought he was the solicitor, but he turned out not to be. He asked me to wait and I started thinking about how to pay the solicitor. I asked his assistant how much the solicitor would charge just for a consultation. He told me the fee and said that if he decided to work on the case, he would discuss the charge. I said okay and carried on waiting for the solicitor. He arrived and I told him about my situation. He said that I was in the right and that he would help me. As I was about to leave the office to call my brother, the solicitor slapped me on the face saying that I should have paid the consultation fee. I was shocked since I had thought I would come back and discuss the fee. I muttered that I intended to pay his fee. When I asked how much it was, he told me a price different from that indicated by his assistant. I didn't have that much money. So I told him that my money wasn't enough for the consultation. He seemed very pissed off, but said it was okay. I left his office feeling terrible. When I went to see my brother, he asked me why I looked so upset. I didn't say anything to anyone and decided that my father was right. If you didn't have any money, you didn't have rights.
